“The NHS Scotland Global Citizenship Programme has established and supported a vibrant community of NHS Scotland staff who are interested in global health work and international volunteering. NHS staff in Scotland have a global outlook which has allowed them to both share skills and expertise with other health systems, and also to learn from those same health systems in order to bring home new ideas to improve patient care at home in Scotland.”
Neil Gray Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care
Through Scotland’s International Development Strategy Dr Khuram Khan has established links between The School of Forensic Mental Health Scotland, Khyber Teaching Hospital Pakistan and Sir Cowasjee Institute of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences Pakistan.
The initiative started in 2017. The aim has been to interact with Mental Health and Criminal Justice Professionals in Pakistan to share Medicolegal knowledge, to establish systems to provide training and expertise, as well as to strengthen the interface between the two systems.
The use of technology has made it possible to ensure the sustainability of educational initiatives and enable delivery from a range of speakers.
The initial stages involved liaising with Justice Project Pakistan, Group Development Pakistan and Mental Health Authority Sindh Pakistan, to interact with Criminal Justice Professionals on issues relating to Mental Health, Law and Human Rights.
‘Twinning’ of The State Hospitals Board for Scotland and SoFMH with Sir Cowasjee Jehangir Institute of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences, Pakistan (Sir C. J. Institute) was established in 2020.
In 2020 Pakistan Psychiatric Society requested Dr Khuram Khan’s assistance to develop a workshop on issues of Mental Disorder, Offending and the Law. Dr Khuram Khan delivered a presentation of Sindh (Pakistan) Mental Health Act 2013, using the methodology of NHS Education Scotland’s Approved Mental Health Practitioner Training Programme, developed in conjunction with SoFMH. This is also featured in the “N2F” course tailored for the Mental Health and Criminal Justice Professionals in Pakistan.
