DIFFERENCE between PTSD and COMPLEX PTSD and the relationship with OFFENDING:
PTSD may develop following exposure to an extremely threatening or horrific event. It’s characterized by all of the following:

Complex PTSD may develop following exposure to an event or series of events of an extremely threatening nature, most commonly prolonged or repetitive events from which escape is difficult or impossible, ( e.g slavery, prolonged domestic violence, repeated sexual or physical abuse). All diagnostic requirements for PTSD are met.
In addition, complex PTSD is characterized by problems in affect regulation, beliefs about onself as defeated or worthless, and challenges in forming and maintaining meaningful healthy relationships with others.

Tauma survivors with PTSD or complex PTSD may be more likely to engage in offending behavior due to difficulties with emotional regulation, impulse control , and coping mechanisms, this can lead to aggressive or violent behavior, substance abuse, or other forms of offending.
Addressing underlying trauma is crucial for reducing recidivism.
